History of Food (from Beyond Organic Living)

Like everything else, food has a history. In the past, people were directly connected to their food supply, but now we have a near total disconnect from our food. In fact we are totally dependent on others for food, and we have not been self-sufficient in our food supply since the late 1700's. Reliable sources have stated that today "We are 9 meals away from anarchy". This is because our local markets only stock approximately 72 hours, 3 days or nine meals of inventory.

Long ago we were hunter gatherers. In short hunters and gatherers searched and found food and water wherever it was present. When it was no longer available they moved on to the next area. So in tune with their food they even learned the migration patterns of animals and which plants were safe to eat. Of course this was very healthy when available. Unfortunately it was unpredictable and could barely sustain a small tribe.

The health issue we are faced with today is that we are genetically wired to thrive on this naturally obtained fuel. Today our most valuable weapon to protect ourselves from what is sold is to be a knowledgeable label reader. A few simple rules of thumb would be:

1. If it is sold in a bag or a can with long shelf life, beware. Typically found in the aisles of your market. Healthier choices are usually on the perimeter of the market. Marketing slogans can be deceiving and misleading so buyer beware.

2. If it was previously alive you have a fighting chance it could be good for you. The label reading rules are these:

    a. Organic - 5 digits and starts with a 9. Grown naturally with no chemicals.  Think 9 is Divine to quote my good friend Mikki Douglas from Planet Mikki.

    b. Conventional - 4 digits and starts with a 4. Grown with chemicals and pesticides.

    c. GMO - 5 digits and starts with an 8. Grown unnaturally and genetically modified.

Being genetically wired for thousands of years anything not organic is recognized by the body as non-self. The body will attempt to deal with this by sequestration or elimination. An optimally functioning nervous and immune system are important here. Either way, with overload the body eventually breaks down and the fuse box of symptoms starts to go off. The health care crisis of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity in conjunction with sedentary lifestyle among others are the results of this behavior. The enormity of the pharmaceutical industry, agricultural industry, and Insurance industry is additional evidence of the calamity we can no longer afford. Coincidentally the same people sit on the same boards of the above mentioned industries. They are "killing us slowly".
